Why Braces?

Braces have long been a highly effective way to improve both the look of your smile and the function of what we call your “chewing system,” which consists of the teeth, the two temporomandibular joints just in front of each ear, and the muscles surrounding the teeth and joints. We offer two effective braces options and a unique approach to achieving results.

Metal Braces

Made of high-grade metal alloys and combined with elastic ties or bands to gently move teeth as prescribed, metal braces are the most common type. The metal braces we use have smaller, more comfortable brackets than you might expect, making them much less invasive than braces were “back in the day.” Plus, you’ll have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Clear/Ceramic Braces

As the name suggests, ceramic/clear braces are less visible on your teeth than metal braces. This makes them popular among adults and teens who prefer a more discreet treatment approach but still want the benefits braces provide. They’re a bit more fragile than metal braces, and the elastic ties can become stained by certain foods and smoking. We’ll help you consider all aspects of your treatment options so you’re making a choice that best fits your lifestyle and your goals.

Braces, The Kozak Way

Not every orthodontist in Kenosha has studied the physical aspects of how teeth, muscles, and joints interact with as much depth as Dr. Kozak. As a result, “The Kozak Way” has 4 principles that deliver benefits beyond simply giving you a beautiful smile:

1. Proper diagnosis & a clearly defined treatment plan
Dr. Kozak approaches each case much like an architect building a skyscraper would. Knowing his work needs to deliver benefits for a lifetime, he carefully crafts a “blueprint” prior to treatment to ensure success.

2. Optimal start time & treatment length
Our goal is to deliver the best possible results in the shortest amount of time, so Dr. Kozak won’t begin treatment until the time is right and he’s able to work on as many corrective processes as possible.

3. Specialized techniques
Among Dr. Kozak’s diverse orthodontic methods is a tactic called “indirect bonding.” It can’t be completed during your first visit, but indirect bonding is more precise, your braces are more effective, and you’ll spend less time in our chair at appointments. So, while Dr. Kozak doesn’t offer “same day braces,” the trade-off is ultimately a more efficient treatment strategy.

4. State-of-the-art technology & best-in-class patient care
We combine the latest technology with a highly trained team who is among the best in the industry and dedicated to making your treatment time as fulfilling and positive as it can be.

Straight Teeth for Life, Guaranteed

We stand behind our orthodontic care with a lifetime guarantee. If your teeth ever require re-straightening after you complete your final treatment with Dr. Kozak, we will gladly replace your braces at no charge. The only cost to you is a monthly charge for adjustments and the cost of a new retainer. A healthy smile should last a lifetime. For those rare occasions when it doesn’t, there’s the Kozak Lifetime Guarantee.

Braces FAQs

Are there foods I cannot eat while I have braces?

There are a few to avoid, but not many:

  • Avoid sticky/chewy foods like gum, licorice, toffee, and caramels.
  • Stay away from hard foods like ice, nuts, apples, raw carrots, and hard pita or tortilla chips.
  • Minimize sugary foods like cake, ice cream, cookies, pie, and candy.
  • Only rarely enjoy sugary drinks like soda, sweetened tea, Gatorade, Kool-Aid, and other drinks with sugar.

How do I brush my teeth with braces?

With a bit of practice, you’ll soon make brushing with braces a seamless part of your daily routine:

  1. Begin by giving your braces a quick rinse with water to remove any food particles trapped between the wires or brackets.
  2. When you brush, start at the gum line, holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. Gently move the bristles toward your brackets from both the top and bottom, ensuring they reach under the wires and around the brackets.
  3. After brushing, follow up with thorough flossing. We’ll guide you through this during your appointment to avoid dislodging or loosening your brackets or wires. Like brushing, it may take some getting used to, but with practice, you’ll become a pro in no time.

How often should I brush my teeth while in braces?

You should brush your teeth at least four times each day—after each meal and before going to bed. We’ll go over how to brush with braces and may also provide a prescription fluoride toothpaste you can take home, if necessary.

Are braces painful? How do I ease the pain?

Generally, braces are not painful. However, you may feel a little sore or uncomfortable immediately after you first get them. This soreness is normal, and it will not last long.

A saltwater rinse can help relieve soreness and inflammation. Dissolve a single teaspoon of salt in a full cup of lukewarm water and swish around your mouth for a few minutes. If soreness persists, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If you experience lip, cheek, or tongue irritation in the weeks after getting braces, some dental wax can alleviate the problem quickly.

How long does it take to see the results from braces?

This largely depends on each patient’s specific orthodontic issues. In general, treatment times range from 6 to 30 months (about 2 and a half years). The “average” time frame a person is in braces is approximately 22 months (about 2 years).

Can I get braces that are less noticeable?

Yes! Because not everyone is proud to flash that coveted “tin grin” smile, we offer clear/ceramic braces. They are more discreet and just as effective as metal braces. In addition, you might consider Invisalign® aligners, which offer an even more inconspicuous look during treatment and more dietary flexibility—all with potentially the same results, depending on your needs. The cost is equivalent to braces, too!

Is it too late to have braces if I am already an adult?

A surprising percentage of our patients are adults. In fact, no patient is “too old” to wear braces! What’s more, if you have dental insurance, there’s a good chance you have orthodontic benefits, so why pay for benefits you’re not using? We accept most plans and can help you make the most of your coverage, so book a free consult and start your new smile adventure at any age!

Unfortunately, it is impossible to give the exact cost for treatment until we have examined you. We will cover the total cost and payment options during your consultation.
